Pre-op Lab Tests

Many surgeons order routine lab tests before you are admitted to the hospital or before certain outpatient procedures.

The tests help find possible problems that might complicate surgery if not found and treated early.

Every surgery is different, just as every patient is different. So, the tests your surgeon orders may be different from the tests described here, or you may have more tests than the average patient. Pre-surgery testing is very individualized.

Pre-op Blood Test Panel

Pre-operative testing is usually done during the few weeks leading up to the surgery date. A patient is required to do this type of testing to give rise to potential complications and analyze overall health.

Each surgery is different as such testing requirements may differ. For this reason, it is always important to discuss the required testing with the physician or surgeon before having bloodwork performed.

The Pre-Op Testing Panel Includes:
Additional tests may be necessary as determined by your doctor or specialist.  Women are sometimes required to take a pregnancy test.  A complete urinalysis that helps to evaluate kidney function and look for infections is also common. Additional pre-op surgery panels including one that includes an HIV test and one with both HIV and pregnancy testing are also available.
